Joanna Brickley Gorman

A lonely grave lies beneath several tall trees on an embankment on the side of North Road. Buried here is Joanna Brickley Gorman and her infant child who died one summer day in 1883, leaving behind Joanna’s husband, Richard Gorman.

Joanna Brickley was born July 28, 1855 in Canada and married Richard Gorman on November 22, 1881. Richard was born around 1856 in Ireland to George and Katherine Mulligan Gorman. He was one of seven children.

It appears that Joanna and Richard may have lived in Norwich or Norwichtown. No indication of her connection to the North Road in the Waterford location has been found.

About five years after Joanna died, Richard remarried and lived with his second wife, Mary Nolan in Norwich. When Richard died in 1919 and Mary in 1922, they were both buried in St. Joseph Cemetery in Norwich. Another stone was lovingly placed at their gravesite in remembrance of Richard’s first wife, Johanna, and their newborn child.

It is not known why Joanna was buried on North Road Road in Waterford. No connection to this location has been found to the family.
